One of our readers, Amy H. has shared some great tips about onions with us. Thank you, Amy H!
“Every Sunday I chop an onion and use it during the week, so I can vouch for this tip! Huge time saver! Here’s another one – don’t store onion in plastic containers. I used to do this and couldn’t figure out why all my plastic storage containers smelled so bad. It was the onions. And you can’t get the smell out once its there. When I started using pyrex bowls with lids, the problem was solved. One more – put the onion in the freezer for 5-10 mins before chopping it. That also helps with the tears!”
By the way, what do you do if you don’t have a Pyrex/glass container?
Here’s the solution. After you wash and dry the container, place crumpled-up newspaper inside, close the lid, and store. The ink from the newspaper absorb the smell. It works with not just onion, but other kinds of smell too, such as curry, lasagna, and other stinky (and tasty) food.
